Key Challenge Audit
Knowing what the key tensions or challenges are is a great first step in conflict resolution. This audit sheet will help you organize your thoughts. It is also a great tool to compare your issues with your spouse, and then with the farm family. Elaine will expect your audit as part of her coaching process with you.
Because I Love You List
Maggie Van Camp and Angie Fox became widows in their 40s and did not have a working list of suppliers, contacts, and networks to keep running the farm without their husbands. So, they created the “Because I Love You List” which is a document where farm families can keep all the information that’s used on the farm (ie: passwords to get into each person’s computer). This gives the family peace of mind knowing that there’s a master file should key people die or be incapacitated.
Kick-start Succession Conversations
Young farmers are keen to find out when they can become managers and owners. Uncertainty creates heaps of tension, anxiety, and frustration. Use this tool crafted by Elaine and Maggie Van Camp, former journalist at Country Guide, to get your farm team talking and making decisions to kick-start better farm transition conversations. You can do this!
Knowing your cherished beliefs is key to being aligned with your goals. Use this Values Cloud with your farm team to circle each person’s top 5 values, then put them separately on post-it notes, and then compare everyone’s values at your next meeting. Notice what you have in common and what you don’t. If you all value ‘respect’ and ‘honesty’, then you know you have a strong foundation to work on. If only one person is valuing ‘teamwork’, then it’s a clue as to why the farm team may be having conflict.
